Course Description:
Students will spend approximately 40 hours per week in the
Emergency Department (ED) providing patient emergency care. Clinical responsibilities include: initial
triage and evaluation, formulation of diagnostic and therapeutic plans,
disposition and referral to appropriate services of patients in the ED. In addition to clinical management, there
will be an examination at the end of the rotation and weekly there are 4 hours
of lectures which the student is expected to attend.
Goals:
To achieve an experience in the diagnosis and treatment of a
wide range of medical and surgical problems in the Emergency Department at the
University of Louisville Hospital. In
addition, the student will participate in the management of major emergencies,
and will gain experience in first contact or primary care of disease and
injury.
Method of Evaluation:
Observation of clinical skills, knowledge base and
acquisition of skills is evaluated by the faculty and residents for a composite
evaluation. Seventy percent of the
final grade is based on this evaluation.
A written final examination, based on the lectures and textbook will
comprise 25% of the grade, and an average of three quiz scores for the remaining 5% of the grade. Honors will
be based on clinical evaluation & final examination and historically has
amounted to 10-15% of all grades.
A
patient log must be maintained and submitted to the Department of Emergency
Medicine upon completion of this rotation.
