FMED-911 Family Practice Externship

Prerequisites: 4th year standing & approval of the above faculty. 

 

Course Description:

 Clinical experience in private practice and family medicine is provided in the University Model Offices.  Both ambulatory care and inpatient services may be included.  Attendance and participation in the Family Practice Residency Teaching Conferences and Friday morning Grand Rounds is required of all students in this elective.

 

Goals:

 Students will function in a capacity similar to a Family Practice Resident.  It will also provide students with an opportunity to enhance their skills in patient interviewing, case management and when applicable, some procedures.  Students may also participate in other programs that are designed for the Family Practice residents which may include, but not limited to, the Geriatric Evaluation and Treatment Unit, the Flexible Sigmoidoscopy Clinic, Normal Obstetrical Clinic, nursing home patients, the Physicians in the School Program and home visits.  When a particular student has particular needs, other goals and objectives could be structured to meet the needs of the individual student.

 

Method of Evaluation:

 Observation of performance in the clinical setting will be the basis for the evaluation.  Also, attendance and participation in teaching conferences will be taken into consideration in the student's evaluation.

 

 

 

FMED-912 Geriatric Clerkship

Prerequisites:

3rd or 4th year standing.  Arrangements should be made four weeks before the start of the program. 

 

Course Description:

 This rotation will provide clinical experience in the ambulatory care of the elderly.  Emphasis will be on the evaluation and treatment of both the medical and psychological needs of the elderly through a team approach utilizing the physician, clinical gerontologist and nurse practitioner.  Clinical experiences will take place in the Geriatric Evaluation and Treatment Unit, Well-Elderly Clinic and Christian Health Center.  Also included will be home visits, nursing home visits and visits to agencies dealing with the elderly.

 

Goals:

 To provide an opportunity to observe the medical problems of the elderly and increase student awareness and knowledge regarding their health maintenance.

 

Method of Evaluation:

 Observation of performance.  Supervision and evaluation of patient management.

 

 

 

FMED-917 School Health

Prerequisite:

4th year standing. Arrangements should be made eight weeks before the start of the program. Students should talk with Dr. Donna Roberts to discuss the elective prior to approval for the rotation.

 

Course Description:

 Schools are a major institution that can influence the health and well being of youth.  Experience will be gained by assisting school staff in the health needs of students; observing children with behavioral disorders, learning disorders and physical disabilities; interacting with students and teachers in classroom situations; and working with school resource centers.

 

Goals:

 The goals of the rotation are to increase the understanding of the role of physicians in schools, gain knowledge of how schools function and the role of the schools in family and community health.  Objectives are for the student to:

  1. Identify medical problems and issues in school health;
  2. Present age appropriate health information;    
  3.  Recognize children with medical conditions that may inhibit learning; and
  4. Examine community resources to assist school aged children.

 

Method of Evaluation:

 Observation of performance.  The evaluation form filled out by school personnel and students will account for part of the evaluation.

 

 

 

FMED-918 Introduction To Medical Informatics

Prerequisite:

4th year standing.  Student must contact Dr. Charles Kodner and receive approval for your project before the rotation begins to receive credit.

Goals:

 The student should have the opportunity to:

  1. Acquire and demonstrate basic computer skills, or expand existing skills;
  2. Experience or investigate a broad range of topics in the realm of medical informatics;
  3. Complete a defined set of projects related to areas of special interest; and
  4. Define possible future involvement in the area of medical informatics.

 

Proposed topics to include:

Office Systems, Computer Systems & Technology, Web Applications, Expert Systems, Decision Science, Hospital Systems, Structured Language Research, Information Search, Retrieval and Management, Standards Systems and Organizations, Medical Informatics Community, Medical Education, Telemedicine and Telecommunications and Basic Computer Skills and Usage.

 

Method of Evaluation:

 Subjective Honor, High Pass, Pass or Fail grade based on the student's displayed initiative, interest and completion of individual objectives defined at the start of the course in conjunction with the faculty sponsor.
