Course Description:
The student will be assigned to general neurology as well as sub-specialty neurology clinics in the faculty practice, including epilepsy, headache, neuromuscular disorders, multiple sclerosis, stroke, and pediatric neurology. In addition, the students will attend resident continuity clinics in that site. The teaching technique will be primarily 1:1 preceptor/ student setting with assigned readings. Approval must be obtained in advance prior to beginning the rotation from the Director of Medical Student Education in Neurology.
Goals:
The student will have a one-on-one experience with a faculty member in a variety of locations, seeing neurologic outpatients. The student will have exposure to neuroradiology, EEG and EMG.
Method of Evaluation:
Subjective by attending physician
A patient log must be maintained and submitted to the Department of Neurology upon completion of this rotation.

Course Description:
The student will be an integral part of the team of residents who evaluate patients with neurologic problems. Evaluation of patients with common problems such as stroke syndrome, dizziness and headaches will be emphasized. At the end of the rotation, the student will be expected to perform a problem-oriented neurologic exam and be able to discuss material contained in the book, Practical Neurology for the Primary Care Physician. Approval must be obtained in advance prior to beginning the rotation from the Director of Medical Student Education in Neurology.
Goals:
The general goal of the course is to acquaint the student with a variety of presentations of the neurologic examination, to teach the students to perform an adequate neuologic examination, to have firsthand experience with neurologic diseases and to teach the student how to evaluate the most common types of neurologic complaints. The student will have a first-hand experience of what it is like to be a resident in neurology.

Course Description:
The two week elective in Neurology may be individually arranged with Dr. Sowell. The experience will be designed to meet the student's ultimate professional objectives. The elective may include experiences in neurodiagnostic studies, neuroradiology or private outpatient clinics. Most students enjoy attending private neurology outpatient clinics with attendings. Approval must be obtained in advance prior to beginning the rotation from the Director of Medical Student Education in Neurology.
Goals:
The general goal of this short rotation is to acquaint the students with a variety of presentations of neurologic problems and to assist the student in refining his neurologic examination.

Course Description:
During this rotation, which may be considered an externship, the student will have a much greater degree of responsibility that what was required in the senior clerkship. The experience can be tailored for individual needs; but, in general, will consist of taking responsibility for inpatients and consultations at the VAMC under the supervision of the neurology residents as well as private tutorial sessions in the private offices of the neurology attendings. Approval must be obtained in advance prior to beginning the rotation from the Director of Medical Student Education in Neurology.

Course Description:
This elective is designed to provide an introduction to the diagnosis and management of seizure disorders. Students will participate in the epilepsy clinics at the University of Louisville Hospital. Students will also follow patients admitted to the University of Louisville Hospital epilepsy monitoring unit and participate in the emergency management of status epilepticus. All activities will be supervised by the clinical neurophysiology fellows and Dr. Modur. Approval must be obtained in advance prior to beginning the rotation from the Director of Medical Student Education in Neurology.
Goals: This elective is designed to provide students with an overview of the diagnosis classification and management of seizure disorders. At the end of this elective experience students should be able to:
- Understand the classification of seizures and epilepsy syndromes;
- Distinguish between seizures and other phenomena that may mimic seizures;
- Understand the role of EEG and imaging studies in the evaluation and management of seizure disorders; and
- Understand basic aspects of anticonvulsant drug use.

Course Description:
Opportunity to watch and/ or participate in performing neurodiagnostic tests such as electromyography, eletroencephalography and polysomnography. Join fellows and residents in teaching sessions in clinical neurophysiology including seizure monitoring. Approval must be obtained in advance prior to beginning the rotation from the Director of Medical Student Education in Neurology.
Goals:
By the end of the elective the student should gain adequate insight into the indications, techniques and utility of neurodiagnostic tests in various neurological disorders.

Course Description:
The student will be an integral part of the headache team, learning a systematic approach to the evaluation and management of the headache patient. Students will be expected to initially obtain history and physical examination, then deliver a clear, concise, thorough and organized presentation to the attending physician. By the end of the rotation, students will be able to perform a problem-oriented Neurologic exam and discuss material contained in the book, The Practicing Physician's Guide to Headache. Approval must be obtained in advance prior to starting the rotation from the Director of Medical Student Education in Neurology.
Goals:
The General goal of the course is the familiarize the student with a logical approach to the management of headache disorders, including appropriate headache interview, specific focused headache examination, and a systematic approach to the planning of treatment for the headache patient. The student will be prepared to manage most common headache disorders upon completion of the rotation.

Course Description: This rotation through the Movement Disorders Clinic provides students with the opportunity to be exposed to both clinical and research aspects of movement disorders. Student will gain first hand experience in the clinical setting and acquire in skills to better evaluate, diagnose and treat patients with all types of movement disorders and dementia's.
Goals: the goals of the rotation are to provide first hand experience in the practice, management and research of patients with movement disorders and dementia.
Method of Evaluation: Students are expected to actively participate in all Movement Disorder Clinics and seminars. research projects, including the collection and analysis of data will be assigned. Students will be required to give presentations and reports and will contribute to writing one manuscript during the rotation.
